Taking the Next Step: Following Jesus (6-11)

Listen Here:

Remember that sermon notes are a guideline and may not be exactly what was preached.

John 14:1-7

Back in Chapter 13:33 Jesus told the disciples that were He is Going they cannot come…

Where is Jesus Going?  To prepare a place for you…

How do we get there? Believing…

What does that mean? Obedience; Taking the Next Step

Vs. 1 Believing gets us there… Back in chapter 11 at the death of Lazarus Jesus said “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” (25-26). Now, in these verses Jesus adds something to that…

There comes a time when we have to believe what we cannot prove, to accept what we cannot understand.  William Barclay said, “If, in our darkest hour, we believe that somehow there is a purpose in life and that that purpose is love, even the unbearable becomes bearable and even in the darkness there is a glimmer of light.”

God is Love (1 John 4:16). We are to abide in that love, to walk in it, taking the Next Step of obedience in and out of the love of God; walking in His will. God’s will is to get us to the place prepared for us/you, with Him, as we take that Next Step. As we step out in faith…

There are two places prepared… see Matthew 25:34, 41, 13:41

What were the sheep doing in chap. 25?

Who are the wheat?

Weeds/tares? Goats?

Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness. – Matthew 7:21-23

If we forsake the Way, we are not or no longer walking with Jesus, but going our way then where are we headed?

If we reject the Truth; what God is telling us through Jesus and His Word then what we are Rejecting is Eternal Life! The Life that Jesus has for us.

Eternal life is ours now as we walk with Jesus going His way, walking in His Truth and receiving His life!

Let not your hearts be troubled, have no fear, God has made a way, He has sent Jesus to show us the, to be the way, for us He is the Truth. Too often we are looking for the way that God has for us and all the time Jesus has been calling, telling us that He is the Way, but until we seek after Him, seek to walk in His way by taking the Next Step of obedience we will be stuck where we are, or worse, going our own way, the way the enemy went, his own and in following him we will end up where he is going… see Matthew 25:41 and 13:42.

For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first. For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them. What the true proverb says has happened to them: “The dog returns to its own vomit, and the sow, after washing herself, returns to wallow in the mire. – 2 Peter 2:20-22 (see also Hebrews 6:4-6, 10:29, Romans 11:22)

In Matthew 25 after separating the unrighteous people (goats) from His righteous people (the sheep) because the people he compared to goats thought they were as righteous as those around them, Jesus said to them “Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.” The way we choose to go will lead us to the place of the one we are following. If you only invest an hour or two following Jesus and the rest of the week going after the world where will you end up?

Parable of the weed/tares – explained in Matthew 13:36-43

Are your neighbors walking the way, knowing the Truth and Living the life of Christ?  If not; how are you fulfilling the command of Jesus to make disciples, how are you teaching them to “Observe” all that He commanded? (See Matthew 28:19-20)
