Dependence or Independence? (7/2)

Listen here:

Remember that sermon notes are a reference and may not be *exactly* what was preached.

John 14:15-17 – “If you love me, you will keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever. He is the Spirit of truth. The world is unable to receive him because it doesn’t see him or know him. But you do know him, because he remains with you and will be[c] in you.

  1. Conditional: Vs. 15, This is a conditional promise… What are the commands of Christ?

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. – John 3:16-18

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age. – Matthew 28:19-20

  1. Who is the Helper? Romans 8

Vs. 9 “You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.

Spirit of Truth – For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. – 2 Peter 1:21

Pneuma: Wind, Breath, Spirit – All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. – 2 Timothy 3:16-17

  1.  What Does He do?  (Comforter, old English, to make one strong)

But as for me, I am filled with power, with the Spirit of the LORD, and with justice and might, to declare to Jacob his transgression and to Israel his sin. – Micah 3:8

See Nathan, Elijah, etc.

People filled with the Spirit were different! They were empowered and led by something/someone beyond themselves who enabled them to go further than what was humanly possible. The Spirit provided strength, wisdom, patience, and revelation and enabled them to do what they were called to do!

Only our obedience to God’s Word allows engagement with the Spirit. It is only when we are obedient to the commands of Jesus that our lives will change; that we become more Christ like.

For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. – Romans 8:13-14  (emphasis added)

But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. – Galatians 5:18 (emphasis added)

Are you depending on God (Helper) or are you independent from Him doing your own thing in your own strength and power?  Repentance…

But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. – Galatians 5:16-17

The Spirits empowers us to live the life of Christ today, now!

This is power to change things and make them what they ought to be (think Romans 8:28) to change us and make us into what God wills for us to be. But we must surrender to the Working of the Spirit in our lives.
