The Helper: Faith and The World (7/30)

Listen Here:

Remember that sermon notes are just a guideline and may not be exactly what was preached.

John 14:15-31, Luke 4:1-13

Vs. 15 Who has He empowered with His Spirit, who was given a Helper to be with them forever?

The problem in the Church is that we have become so self-sufficient that we no longer need  help, or we at least don’t think we do…

He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son (Colossians 1:13). Who has He transferred? Who has He empowered with the Spirit?

Vs. 30 the world and its ruler have no claim on Jesus. See Luke 4.

We as Believers, followers of Christ, are empowered/helped by the Spirit to overcome the world and, as His, the world has no claim on us until we forsake the way the truth and the life given us in Jesus.

The world tells us ‘You are it,’ you are all on your own, it is all about you. and the moment we believe all of that we start to charge through life independent of others, 10 ft tall and bullet proof, we have all the answers and we think we have no need of help!

At one time we all were of the world, dead in our sin; we lived it, walked it, and were involved in spreading it’s message. Live and let live, it’s all about me, if it feels good do it.

And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.  – Ephesians 2:1-3

But as believers who are following Jesus; people of faith who how have received the Helper, we are to walk in obedience to His Word, in 2 Timothy 2:22-26 Flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart. Have nothing to do with foolish, ignorant controversies; you know that they breed quarrels. And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evilcorrecting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth, and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will

And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. – 2 Corinthians 4:3-5

Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out. – John 12:31

In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” – John 16:33b

Vs. 31a: Does the world know your love for God? Do those you work with, your friends, your family?   How?

Vs. 31b: Rise up, let us go from here!

Are we there yet? In Philippians 3 – Paul has not arrived yet, he admitted to having issues.

For we walk by faith, not by sight. – 2 Corinthians 5:7

Stuck in the past, good things: the best days are behind us,  bad things…prodigal… divorce,  hurt.

The present is not permanent – this too shall pass. Rise up, let us go from here! Press on!

Focus where you will be not where you are.

Our issues do not define who we are, rise up, let us go from here

Stuck in the past, stuck in the present.

Is the present situation the only reality there is?

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.  – Hebrews 1:1

Who are those that can go to the Father? See John 14:6

Who are those that receive the Helper/Spirit? See John 14:15-17, 21, 23
