John 15:1-11

STORM/BRANCH  – a branch falls off my apple tree in a storm, can I stick it in a glass of water and grow apples?

What/who produces fruit? The vine is the source of life for the branches, branches are where fruit is produced…

No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. – 1 John 3:6

We are being told to abide in Christ, that if we do we will produce fruit.

This is an act of will, something you must choose to do.

If we are abiding in Christ we must abide by his way of thinking with all that He has given us. Jesus did abide with His Father, He walked according to His word, spoke what he had been told to speak, did what He was sent to do and freed us all from bondage to sin!

The word “IF” is used here in chapter 15 ten times, 82 times in the gospel of John, 602 in the New Testament and 1595 times throughout the  Bible. “If” is a conditional participle, a fork in the road: it is at that precise point that the road divides…

Yes I will abide when…  see June 14 Utmost for His highest, Oswald Chambers.

We are called to come to Jesus NOW!

the disciple who abides in Christ is in the will of God” Oswald Chambers,  Utmost, June 7

We have been given the Helper, who strengthens us, to face those uncomfortable situations, so that we can grow and mature, and become more Christ-like. He Helps us to Abide!!!!

Our abiding love for God and others is proof that we belong to Him and it shows each of us that we are abiding In His Love, that we are making our abode with Him!

A self-centered life, where I decide what I will do and what I won’t, where I place my comfort before that of others, where I sleep in, go camping, go fishing, mow grass, or just decide to stay home from worshiping God or praying is placing myself above the will of God!

A-self-centered life is its own punishment. When we expect and demand things of others, that they do what we want, there is stress, anguish and disappointment. Which usually comes from hurt because of our expectations. Yet they may not have known our expectations or been able to live up to them if they had…

But when we abide in His love, when we are expressing that love in all that we say and do, we discover the deep and abiding joy that friendship with our Savior brings.

Story of Starfish…  “But it matters to this one…”

We are not called to love the whole world, just the people God puts before us, at any given moment. Now… Love your neighbor…. Great Commandment, we are created to Love….

And how are we to love the people God places around us and on our path? Just like He loved us…

Love frees us—you and me, to fulfill all the other “one anothers” of His Word… without love it is impossible.

So then how do we get this love, divine love? The kind of love that does not fall apart when our wives tell us that we are negligent in putting away our clothes? Is our instant come back along the lines of “there are dishes piled in the sink”? Can we take correction without retaliation? How do we get the love that does not resent correction? How do we get the love of 1 Corinthians 13 that is long suffering, is kind, never envies, isn’t arrogant or rude, does not insist on having its own way, that is not irritable or resentful, that bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, the kind of love that endures all things? See John 15:10 Big IF!

This “if” can separate us from all that is of God! See Matthew 22:37-40

What is it worth to be filled with the love of Jesus, a love that caused Him to be a servant for all, a sacrifice for all, and a Savior for all, and How did He get this love? 15:10b

Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. –  1 Thessalonians 5:11

No where in the bible, no where, are we told to get love from one another…

You need to abide in His love, to live like you are loved by the very Creator of the universe, because you are, and you are to live loving others like you are loved… The love that we are to have for one another comes from God it has been poured into our hearts… It is something that we are to abide in…

The standard for our interaction is to be love, it was what we were created for, but when we love something or someone more than God what is that called? Idolatry.  Whatever takes the place of God in your life, whatever keeps you from the body of Christ, that love becomes sin!
