Please remember that sermon notes act as a guide and may not be exactly what was preached.
Vs. 18-20 – “A little while” you will weep and sorrow, but “the world will rejoice.” The World is not your friend (see 15:18-27) it is the world that sought to put our Lord to death… Remember 15:18-19 – It is the world that shouted ‘hosanna’ to the king and less than a week later were yelling to ‘crucify Him.’ It is the god of this world that is out to kill, steal, and destroy… Today: mass murder-seeking the Lord-atheists, ACLU, prayer…
Vs. 21 “A little while” and things are going to get better, something new and better is going to get birthed; it is called labor for a reason. The tribulations, the testing you are going through, will produce joy. If we do not give up and sidestep the process but instead labor along the lines God lays out for us in His word, we allow perseverance to do all that God intends it to do. The Holy Spirit in James tells us, Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything (1:4). Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love Him (1:12). As I heard from the Auschwitz Survivor, “Giving up is a final solution to a temporary problem:” persevere!
Perseverance in the face of trials and tribulations of life, death, sickness, and hurts is difficult. Our first instinct is fight or flee rather than persevere. We can either flee, get angry, fight, and never grow up or become Christ like OR we can embrace the trail, the tribulation, the hurt, and turn to God in love. Then, by His grace through our obedience, our perseverance becomes what God intends us to be. No sane person enjoys the pain and anguish that comes in this life. But God uses all things for the good of those that love Him…
Vs. 22 – No one will take your Joy… Happiness and Joy… Holy Spirit
Vs. 23 – That “little while,” “That Day,” is here; we live in the Day of the Resurrected Lord, Jesus died and rose again, they saw Him Crucified and in a little while they saw Him again! The New covenant, veil of the temple torn/access to Grace; to the no need of intercessor that day is now today is the Day! Now is the Time! D. S. Warner said that the devil works especially to deceive men in either one of two ways: “Some other way than Christ, or some other time than now.”
Today is “that Day” when the Holy Spirit, our helper, the life giving Spirit we are told about in 1 Corinthians 15:45 and Romans 8:2 is active in the lives of believers! And why? Because of the love of God – John 3:16.
In Philippians the Holy Spirit tells us that Jesus, though he was God, He did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine place and privileges; he took the humble position of a servant or slave, being born in the likeness of men. When He appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on the cross.
“That Day” is here! We live in the day of the resurrected Lord! Salvation…
But there is a Day coming and “That Day” is coming soon… no man
It will be a day of wrath and judgment, a day of fire and fury, a day of destruction and doom. The Lord speaking thru Isaiah says, Behold, the day of the LORD comes, cruel, with wrath and fierce anger, to make the land a desolation and to destroy its sinners from it. In 1 Peter, The day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.
But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. The kingdom of heaven is here in this day, a present reality to those that walk in love, but it is also a coming kingdom, righteousness dwells. Heaven – it is there that those that have had the love of God poured into their hearts will dwell eternally, there will be His sheep, those that listen to his voice, those that love one another here out of love for the father, who have answered the call of God and accepted the salvation that was bought for them on the cross out of love.
God, out of love for us, has warned in His word over and over about “That Day” that we need to be ready. Jesus in Matthew 7 said “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’
How is Jesus showing His love for the disciple in this passage of scripture?
How is your love being perfected in what you are going through today?
How is God calling you to love one another?
