This Day – Part 2 (10-22)

Listen here:

Please remember that sermon notes are meant to act as a guide and may not be exactly what was preached.

John 16:23-33

Jesus goes on to tell them about “That Day,” which is actually upon them…

Verse 25 – These Things…”Figures of speech” – The meaning does not lay on the surface, but must be searched for and thought about.

Hope for the future is seen in what Jesus promises the disciples. We on this side of History can see what the love of God has accomplished. Look at David, Moses, Abraham and the 12.

David—Bathsheba…    Moses—murdered…    Abraham—fear, doubt, lied about Sarah etc…    Peter…    John and James…    Thomas…    Paul…    Personal friend – prison, now using for good…

It is not to the strength, courage, or even the faith of men that the church owes its existence. And in spite of the many failures of its members the church does indeed continue to not only exist but to grow. It is to God that the glory belongs for the church would not exist without Him using common, everyday, spiritually weak  individuals as examples to us of His strength, His righteousness, His Grace, and His Love!

Spiritual failure of the 12 in casting out demons

The fact that we are here at all is the work of God in the lives of common people like you and I. The Church will continue to grow if we fulfill our purpose in loving one another as a congregation of His Church, as we move forward taking that Next Step, as those that have gone before us encouraged and encouraging others, by God’s love and grace, which is found in Jesus Christ.

To overcome the spiritual failure in our lives we must turn to God’s love for us and be encouraged by the Grace He offers in Jesus Christ and the cross. So be encouraged! There is always room for more growth!

Do not lose heart, do not give up, “Giving up is a final solution to a temporary problem.” The truth is we may expect many things of God, but He also expects us to be willing to follow His purpose for each of  us…

“Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old.
I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?
I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. – Isaiah 43:18-19

Each step of obedience we take gets us further from our past…

Spiritual failure of the 12 in casting out demons – what did they learn?

Only faith working through love counts for anything! See Galatians 5:6.

We need to pray in faith, trusting God, obedient to His plans, and His will.

And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him. – 1 John 5:14-15

Praying in Jesus Name: Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. – 2 Corinthians 5:20

We can expect God to answer prayer in the right way at the perfect time. He teaches me patience in and through prayer. His timing is perfect in every situation.

God will act at the right time and He is willing to do far more than we ever ask, or think, or imagine. See Ephesians 3:20-21.

What is going on in your life right now that you need to approach the Throne of Grace? Is it Your health… your relationships… your family… your work… your prayer life… your faith… is it your daily walk, is it outside of God’s will, isn’t it time to correct your course to get back in step with His plan for you? If you are outside of God’s will, where is your witness?

Whatever it may be don’t let it become a distraction, so that you lose your focus on God, and it cause you to stumble and fall. You do not have to carry it on your own.

Hymn – ‘What a Friend we have in Jesus’: What a Friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer! O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear. All because we do not carry, everything to God in prayer!

Whatever the situation, whatever the circumstances, bring it to the Lord in prayer. Pray for God to speak, to act, to move, to bless. Pray in Jesus Name by faith and expect God to move.

Beyond the Sermon:

How is God’s love (Grace) seen in your life today?

How are you living out the love of God:  At work?  At home?  At play?

Are you, and have you been, praying in Jesus name?
