John 21:1-14 epilogue… Auction

Do two walk together, unless they have agreed to meet? “to do so”  – Amos 3:3 NIV

We are on a journey, we have a specific destination, we can’t go back to where we were; why would we?

Thomas… 1. I will not believe unless… 2. Jesus: don’t be unbelieving… “Blessed are those who have not seen and still believe” – John 20:29

What had they been commanded to do?

Where was it they were commanded to go? Matthew 28 tells us they were directed to go to the mountain in Galilee… what were they doing at the sea shore?

Vs. 4-6 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. – John 15:5

When did they realize it was Jesus? When did they get blessed? After they had been obedient!

153 fish: Aristotle believed there were 153 species of fish in his time not that there were 153 different kinds in the net… Compare with Luke 5

Added there catch to His; in John 14:12 Jesus said that who ever believes would do the works He did and greater.

What was it they were supposed to be doing? Back in chapter 20, verse 21, “The Lord said to the disciples, ‘Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you. I’m sending you.’ Sending you to do what? To preach the Kingdom, to be fishers of men.’”

But they went back to what they knew, and Thomas, he believed and wasn’t going to be left out again, he participated in all that they were doing!

I don’t think these men lost their faith. I believe they did what most people in our country do today: they set it aside, this new commission… they went back to what they knew because things were not what they were with Jesus there in their midst. No Holy Spirit…

Are we led by the Spirit of Christ, are we following Him? Or have we gone back to the world in practice? Do our words match our walk, are we walking by faith or by sight- what we know, what we see, what we have experienced?

Each time you read or hear from God’s Word you must be prepared to respond in faith, to take action on what you know you are to be doing. If you do not, that is disobedience, unbelief.

In Mark 10 the rich young ruler went back when asked to take a step of faith…

How did he respond to what Jesus told him to do?

There was not response based on faith!

Did you hear why he would not continue on his journey of faith? What was his faith in? Where was his trust?

In John 6:60-66 many of the followers of Jesus turned back  When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Do you take offense at this? Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. But there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.) And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.” After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him (emphasis added).

Israel wanted to return to Egypt to go back to slavery when things got tough… Exodus 16Today, if you hear His voice do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion” – Hebrews 3:15 no trust in God, afraid, 40 years…

What happened to those who turned back—those who turned away? What of those that followed, walked by faith, believed?

These men (Paul and Silas, the disciples of Jesus) who have turned the world upside down have come here also, and Jason has received them, and they are all acting against the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus.

Hebrews 10:39 – But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.

Digging Deeper:

  • What are some things that you put your faith/trust in (for example job, spouse)?
  • Please place about 3 spaces/lines and then: Which of those things, by your actions, how you live, show where your faith/trust is truly placed?
  • Looking at your life now, have you gone back to what you did before you became a Christ follower, or are you moving away from the world and what it places it faith in?
