Please remember that sermon notes are meant to act as a guide and may not be exactly what was preached.
We are at war! There are over 21 million Americans addicted to drugs and alcohol. Ask any one of them how it started and 93% will tell you that it started with a single drink. 3000 unborn children are murdered every single day by Planned Parenthood alone, outside of abortion there are 47 murders a day, 600 reported rapes a day, then there are the staggering statistics concerning theft, porn addiction, child abuse, and broken homes that are a result of the above plus the broken marriages caused by adultery. For those of us in the Kingdom there is a battle going on for the souls of our neighbors, friends, and family members. We are either fighting for them or we are letting them fall to the enemy.
We, as believers, are in a battle for souls, as citizens in the Kingdom we are to be soldiers in the army of the Lord.
Vs. 10 – How do you become strong in anything?
Vs.11 – How do we withstand the schemes of the devil and the evil day?
Vs. 12 – Our enemy – John 8:44
The Enemy is not content with part of your life; he wants to ultimately consume the whole of it. He is mentioned and referred to by other names as well: the thief that comes to kill, steal, and destroy (John 10), the god of this age (2 Corinthians 4), the devil and tempter (Matthew 4), our enemy (Matthew 13), ruler or prince of this world (John 12), the dragon or ancient serpent, who is the devil or Satan (Revelation 20).
We are no longer following the ways of the world; we are Christ followers and belong to the Kingdom of God.
We must not be tolerant to the things of the world, condoning the alternative lifestyles of the world, or getting caught up in the anger and hatred of the world.
That “spirit,” “who is now at work in those who are disobedient.” is mentioned in 1 John.
The spirit of deception, the evil one, our advisory, wants us to be a part of his kingdom. He would like to see a resurrection of the flesh and for us to realign ourselves with him and do evil by sinning.
When we fall to sin or do works of evil, we damage ourselves and are aligning ourselves with the adversary, his agenda, and his kingdom.
These works of the evil one are designed to trap and enslave human beings to act as his emissaries and invade families, churches, communities, and nations, with the works of the flesh.
Vs. 13 – Evil day, stand firm. Evil is knowing that something is morally wrong and continuing to insist on doing it.
Vs. 14 – Belt of truth, when we lie or are deceitful, we speak the enemies’ language, the native tongue of the world. Breastplate of righteousness, the righteousness of Christ, imputed by God, and received by faith, which guards our hearts against the accusations and charges of the enemy, his minions, and those who walk in disobedience. See Ephesians 2.
Vs. 15 – readiness given by the Gospel of Peace( Shalom). Completeness. You are literally saying, “may you be full of well-being” or “may health and prosperity be upon you.”
Anywhere there is a believer that has the readiness given by the gospel of Peace, God has a way for people to learn of His salvation (Romans 10:14-15). Whenever an unbeliever (those of the world) meet a Christian, the unbeliever ought to be face to face with everything he needs to know about the Kingdom and how to enter in.
Vs. 16 – Shield of Faith: The flaming darts of temptation come at us when we least expect it and those temptations can lead to pain and suffering. Ultimately, we may end up choosing to follow the world and thereby forfeit our salvation. Our enemy, the evil one, desires that we fall to temptation in order to cause us or our neighbor pain and suffering now as well as eternally. His kingdom (the world) stands in direct opposition to the Kingdom of God.
He will hurl flaming darts of doubt and discord at us. Doubt comes from our experiences in this life…especially those that challenge our comfort and safety. Faith moves us into realms beyond our ability – to places, situations, and experiences we have never visited because of the impossibility of going there. But we are called to take up the shield of faith and take the next step moving forward against the World…
Vs. 17 – The Helmet of Salvation – protecting the brain, protecting us from the opposite: damnation. This is when the resurrection of our old sinful self takes place… those in the Kingdom have renewed their minds.
The Sword of the Spirit, which the Spirit gives you… For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart (Hebrews 4:12).
Our armor should be dented and nicked. The enemy will use every weapon in his arsenal to tempt you away from your service in the Kingdom, to tempt you to lay down your armor and your only weapon. But Isaiah 54:17 tells us that no weapon that is formed against us shall stand! As with any Kingdom there is a King and we are blessed with the privilege of going to the throne anytime and anywhere!
