Matthew 13:47-52

Vs. 50, same as vs. 42 the close of the age: 49 & 40. And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into hell, 48‘where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.

Unquenchable fire!

John 6, 2 Thessalonians

Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’ – Matthew 7:21-24

Revelation: Last for a reason. Judgment Day, last day, over and over judged by our actions – what we did while here in the World.

Do you Understand?

Read vs 51-52 Earlier in the same chapter, Jesus said to the disciples: “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. For to the one who has, more will be given, and he will have an abundance, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away” (Matthew 13:11-12).

This is followed by a long series of parables about the Kingdom which is concluded with Jesus’ question to the disciples: Have you understood all these things?

To be given the privilege of knowing about the Kingdom is what it means to be discipled, to be trained, to be educated for the Kingdom. And we are called to grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus and His Kingdom.  Jesus came preaching the Kingdom – as a Christian, Christ follower : are you?

We, together as a congregation, are to grow in our understanding so that we can proclaim the Kingdom to the masses. We are to be wheat amongst the tares. Like those scribes of the Kingdom then, we too are to surpass the scribes of the world in our understanding of the Word, the Kingdom, and of our Lord Jesus Christ, including knowledge about the grace and mercy He offers in the Kingdom.

Scribe/Disciple: The disciple who is in the Kingdom is to be spreading the knowledge of the Kingdom to those who do not know Jesus as their King who have no knowledge of His Kingdom.

That is the reason for the parables so that those of/in the Kingdom can reach out into the world and teach about the Kingdom of God. That is to be accomplished by those who are willing to grow like a mustard seed or the apple seed we talked about, to change and, like the branches, to spread the knowledge of the Kingdom throughout the whole world.  Why? So that the birds of the air can find shelter. To go and teach all that Jesus commanded, not just with our words, but also with, and by, our actions! We are to be growing as we go! Disciples who are making disciples! Are you? Can you truly call yourself a growing, maturing Christian? Or have you chosen to stop?

We are to be learning, growing, and reaching further than we ever have before because of our growth! Because we are growing together… Reaching Up and Reaching Out.

We are to bring a fresh clear understanding of the Gospel of the Kingdom, to a world that is unaware of His Kingdom, using all that God has given us in His Word. From the old testament to the new, we don’t change the message, we change the delivery method. We use new studies and applications, we turn communities upside down by our obedience! We reach them, as Jesus did, where they are-out there in the world, in the communities in which we live and work. The world is not beating a path to our buildings, it is up to us, up to you , to spread the Gospel of the Kingdom!

We do that by being Christians, Christ followers, believers, in all that we do and say – Colossians 3 tells us: And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus. That is what a disciple of the Kingdom, a follower of the one True King, one who has been trained for the kingdom, does! We go forth in the name of the King, we pray in His name,  we do everything in His Name, even work in His name, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men (Colossians 3:23). This goes back to surrendering all to have Christ and His Kingdom… a treasure, a pearl of great value.

Jesus wants disciples –He wants none to perish but all to come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9). That’s why He gave His Church the Great Commission. That is why He wants you to be trained for Kingdom living, not only so that we ourselves can grow, but so that we can be the salt of the earth, light in the darkness, and proclaim the Kingdom of God!

And I pray that, by His Holy Spirit, He would help us to do that.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer  said “The Church is the Church only when it exists for others.”

Digging Deeper

  • What is the Kingdom of God to you?
  • How do you gain entrance to the Kingdom?
  • What are you doing to gain knowledge of the Kingdom?
  • What are you doing with that knowledge?

Further Reading:

For further understanding read Colossians 3 and write down what you are to be doing as a believer and what we are to be doing as a congregation (12-17) with one another.

For “extra credit” read Romans 12 and do the same.
